Arthur Alfred PLUMB was born in 1894 in Worlingham ( Wangford Q2-1894 4A:935) son of John and Susan E PLUMB (nee ARTIS)
1901 census... Aged 6 he was at The Bullock Sheds, Honingham with his father John [34] a shepherd born in Lawshall; his mother Susan [31] born Ellough, Suffolk, brother Robert John [9] born Ellough; sisters Gertrude M. [8] born Worlingham, Annie E. [5] born Worlingham and Alice Edith [4 months) born Honingham. 1911 census... Aged 16 a cowman on farm, he was at Wangford, Brandon with his parents and sisters Annie (now recorded as born North Cove) and Alice. One child had died. The family had moved from the registration district of Wangford near Beccles, across the county to Wangford in the Mildenhall registration district, hence Arthur's name on the Memorial at Elveden (sometimes referred to as Weather Heath Memorial) and as such may not have been considered for the Eriswell village memorial. His father's address the Army were using after Arthur's death was Line Kiln Cottage, East Harling. |

He enlisted in Bury St. Edmunds. 5th Corps, the 3rd Division attacked Bellewaarde Farm, Y Wood and the trench system between them on the 16th June. The leading troops got forward so quickly they came under fire from our own guns. The 2nd Suffolk were being held in reserves and came in on the back end of the battle. At nightfall "B" Company was told off to dig a trench linking Y Wood with an adjacent culvert on the Menin Road. hey had their first taste of gas shells but completed their task before day-break. They then spent 4 days consolidating the line and the gruesome task of clearing up the battle field. On the 16th the battalion had 5 men killed on the 16th, none has an identified grave. |
